WHAT APPLE IS PLANNING FOR 2020?

THREE “iPHONE 12” MODELS ARE ALSO IN DEVELOPMENT

We’ve already touched upon what will surely be one of the headline features of the “iPhone 12” line. Whatever that line will actually be called, with “iPhone 12”, “iPhone 12 Pro” and “iPhone 12 Pro Max” obvious placeholder names for the press to use for now, the devices are expected to arrive in screen sizes of 5.4, 6.7 and 6.1 inches respectively. For the first time, however, the low-end 6.1-inch model will also come with an OLED display rather than the LED technology of years past.

Another improvement over the 2019 models will, of course, be the inclusion of 5G connectivity. According to Nomura Instinet analyst Jeffrey Kvaal, this could incentivize wireless carriers to promote the 2020 iPhones more heavily than their predecessors, as doing so would encourage users to switch to relatively expensive 5G service plans.

It looks like Apple will overhaul the design, too; according to rumors cited by MacRumors, at least one model in the 2020 iPhone range will include a metal frame similar to that of the iPhone

4. That phone, launched in 2010, was framed by aluminum of a flat, boxy design, and concept maker Ben Geskin has shown how that could look on the iPhone 12. iMore’s Brandon Russell has hailed Geskin’s renders as “positively http://www.imore.com/2020-iphone-redesign-comes-life-stunning-concept stunning”, adding: “If this truly is Apple’s future … then I’m ready to start lining up now.”

Especially encouragingly, it looks like the polarizing notch could be on the way out. In July, Kuo claimed that at least one of the 2020 iPhones will include a smaller front camera lens, paving the way for a better screen-to-bezel ratio. An analyst at investment firm Credit Suisse has reportedly gone as far as saying that, for 2020, Apple intends to release at least one iPhone model lacking a notch or Face ID, with a fingerprint sensor and front camera instead both built under the display.

WHAT ELSE IS APPLE PLANNING FOR 2020?

Of course, we can’t comprehensively answer this with certainty, but we might just see Mini-LED displays debut in Apple devices before 2020 is out. Kuo believes that high-end iPad and MacBook models with these displays will be released between late 2020 and mid-2021. For these devices, Apple has apparently opted for Mini-LED over OLED technology due to the former’s comparable wide color gamut performance and the fact that Apple can rely on a wider range of suppliers.

The arrival of the new MacBooks could coincide with Apple transitioning the product line from Intel chips to custom ARM-based processors, which rumor suggests could start happening as soon as next year . This is promising, as Apple’s recent A-series chips outperform many Intel chips.

With all of the above rumored to be on Apple’s roadmap, which could also include a fair few surprises, it’s clear to see why the current optimism surrounding Apple could continue for quite a while yet.
