Although the origin of the disease is closely related to genetics, there is no evidence for a specific gene that causes the disease. However, an international team of scientists recently published the results of their research in the journal Science Translational Medicine. Their work found that mutations in the PTCHD1 gene, located on a single male chromosome, are significantly associated with autism. According to scientists, this explains that boys are born autistic four times more often than girls.
