The cameras will be improved in all versions of the iPhone 2022 without exception, but the level of improvement will be different:

  • iPhone 14 will switch to a 12 MP main camera with an enlarged matrix;
  • iPhone 14 Pro will switch to a 48 MP main camera with 8K recording and record-breaking large pixels in binning;
  • All models will receive updated ultra-wide-angle and front cameras.

The main camera in standard versions. In the base iPhone 14, the characteristics of the main camera will be similar or even similar to the module currently used in the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max models.

This camera has the same resolution of 12 megapixels but a larger matrix, due to which the pixel size in it grows from 1.7 to 1.9 microns. That is, by about 12%. This can help improve the quality of shooting with a lack of lighting at night or in poorly lit rooms.

The main camera in Pro-versions. The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max’s main camera is waiting for much more impressive changes: it will receive a record-breaking 48 MP sensor for the iPhone. Recall that the last time Apple changed the resolution of cameras was seven years ago. Then the iPhone 6S received 12 megapixels versus 8 megapixels in the iPhone 6.

And now, in 2022, a jump to 48 megapixels awaits us. In the Android world, such figures are already accustomed, but for Apple, this is really something new. And most importantly, Apple wants to support its 48 megapixels with a very large matrix, which promises to be noticeably larger than those used in most Android smartphones.

Camera specifications for the current iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max. Yellow underlined improvements compared to similar iPhone 12 Pro models.

By default, the pixel size in the iPhone 14 Pro will be a modest 1.2 microns, but with a lack of light, they will be able to combine 4 in 1 (this is called binning), already forming large cells of 2.4 microns. This is essential for shooting, and these pixels are 26% larger than what the iPhone 13 Pro Max can offer today. A step forward in pixel size by more than a quarter at once will be the most significant for Apple over the past decade.

As for the meaning of 48 megapixels, in addition to detailing, they at least open up the iPhone the ability to shoot video in a grandiose 8K resolution. In most Android smartphones, this is not the case since, in addition to 48 megapixels, an extremely powerful processor is also needed here.

The ultra-wide-angle camera will be equally improved for all versions: both basic and Pro. Its resolution will remain the same – 12 megapixels, the size of the sensor will not change, but the novelty will offer an improved lens with seven lenses instead of the current five or six (Pro models). This will help to “pump” the characteristics of the lens by about 20%, and in addition, it will allow you to better deal with distortion when shooting.

Specifications for the main (left) and ultra-wide cameras of the iPhone 13 and 13 Mini.

There is still hope that PDAF is focusing on the ultra-wide-angle module, available only to the iPhone 13 Pro last year, which will reach all models without exception in 2022. We remind you that it is necessary for high-quality macro photography and video shooting.

The front camera will definitely not remain unchanged, but, unlike previous cameras, insiders do not yet have accurate information here. Nevertheless, we assume that the changes in the front camera will be very serious. Among the possible innovations are a new autofocus mechanism, an expanded viewing angle, and a significantly increased resolution.

But the update of the telephoto camera in the Pro versions or its appearance in the younger editions of the iPhone 14 should not be expected. Because of this, advanced optical zoom is not expected in new models, which is already in some Android flagships.
